Anderson high school officially has a girls wrestling team. This is the first year this has successfully been able to have a full girls team, since there usually hasn’t been enough girls for them to be able to have their own separate team. Girls normally don’t choose to do wrestling as a sport because it is stereotypically a male sport.
Freshman Joanna Kirchner defies this stereotype. “I just do it because I wanted to get more physical and I wanted to be in shape,” Kirchner said. Now assuming that’s the main reason girls have chosen to do wrestling as a sport their practices might be different to the girls than to the boys on the teams.
Although according to Kirchner this isn’t true. She said, “practices aren’t different,we all get the same training.” Girls doing the sport don’t get treated any differently than boys. Although they have the same coach. Kirchner says “You get the same attitude as everyone else. There’s no gender in the wrestling room.”
So from what we know the girls on the team get treated the same as the boys although the school hasn’t had a girls team before the team doesn’t think anything of it. They don’t think being girls on a stereotypically boys team is a big deal , because no one makes it a big deal.
Although the sport has its downsides the girls still enjoy it. Kirchner said, “Practices can get scary because of all the things that could happen while wrestling but most of the time it is enjoyable.”
Even though there is a difference between the team members when it comes to gender there isn’t much a difference when it comes to sportsmanship. They treat each other the same and the coach treats them the same. That is why they enjoy it especially when they get to know each other. “Practices are long, but they are fun, especially when you get to know each other, that makes it very fun.” stated Kirchner.
