Numerous Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players gathered to participate in Butler University’s monthly tournament The Butler Brawl on August 31. Participants included highly ranked players such as Woulphy, the number 1 ranked player in Indiana.
The event drew together over 96 entrants from all across the state, including 2 Anderson High School students: Bakari “Citsym” Gosha and Jacob “sliv” Perry.
Of these two students, Gosha was the one to make it furthest in the bracket.
“I ended up placing 49th, losing to two good players,” said Gosha. “I made a few too many mistakes, and ended up losing for it.”
Gosha’s responses to questions about his performance were technical.
“During my set with my first opponent, I noticed a lot of input lag from my controller due to it being wireless,” said Gosha. “I caught it early on, so I was able to switch to wired mode soon after my first set.”
Despite the hardware issues and fixes, Gosha still believes he could have played better.
“In terms of the gameplay itself, I felt that I was playing too aggressively in situations where I didn’t need to,” said Gosha.
Gosha’s previous placements include 49 out of 256 at the 2023 annual Manchester University Spartan Smash tournament and third place in a tournament held by Kankakee Valley High School. Despite the difference in competition, the community remained positive.
“During bracket, one of my opponents, who goes by the tag ‘Wes’, was super chill before we started our games. After he swiftly beat me, he thanked me for the games,” said Gosha. “Overall, everyone there was kind and I would be up for attending another Butler event.”
After numerous sets throughout the entire day, the tournament’s final match ended up with Woulphy and Mystearica, the former number one player in Indiana known for winning matches against world ranked players such as Tea (ranked #16 worldwide), Goblin (ranked #134 worldwide), Lui$ (ranked #63 worldwide), and Fatality (formerly ranked #37 worldwide).
Even though Mystearica sent Woulphy to the loser’s bracket early, Woulphy still presented a challenge to all. In the final match of the day, Mystearica would prove her dominance in Indiana by winning the set against Woulphy 3-0, winning the tournament and taking home the prize of $300.
