Another day, another sports game passed as the Anderson Indian’s Varsity football team went up against the Marion Giants on October 18. Unfortunately, the Varsity football team ended up returning from the game with a defeat 64-24 against the Marion Giants making it the 13th loss they have suffered since last season. What happened during the Varsity football game and what did the football Coach Pennycuff have to say about the game? How does he feel about the continuous losses of the football team this season? These will be the questions discussed during this football recap.
Firstly, I asked Coach Pennycuff about what thought the Marion Giants did that his team could improve on, and here is what he had to say. “I think that they were much more physical and they finished. What I mean by that is that they finished their drafts, their touchdowns, and things like that. They also didn’t get complacent when they had the lead and kept on playing all the way through.” When looking at the team scores you can easily see what Pennycuff meant as the Marion Giants managed to outclass the Anderson Indians in nearly every statistic. For points per game, the Giants score 24.6 on average while the Indians only gain 3.6 on average with Tavious Menifee contributing the most to the average score scoring 2 points on average as an individual. The Giants also wash the Indians in total yards as well with a 301.2 average compared to our 95.3 average. However, it isn’t all bad as the Indians managed to beat out the Giants in receiving yard scores and tackles per game with 62.6 receiving yards and 29.9 tackles compared to their 59.8 receiving yards and 29.1 tackles per game. Christian Townsend and Jensen Shyrock are the team leaders for those respective statistics.
The football team has also been experiencing a decline in players beginning to quit due to various amounts of reasons. Austin French, a varsity football player who quit came on and decided to give his reasonings for quitting and what he would say to any football player looking to join the team. “I came to a point in the season where it was detrimental to stay on the team and personal reasons. Football and sports in general give you a good community to be around and it’s a good way to meet people, be disciplined, follow a schedule, and help you grow into a man. I am very appreciative of everything I’ve been able to learn and accomplish on the football team.” Overall his experience was a positive one and he holds no animosity towards it despite feeling that it was detrimental to stay on. So despite the football team still being unable to win a single game by the time this article has been posted, not everything is completely bad.
