Nearly two thousand people crowded the stands of Highland middle school on Sunday, Nov. 17 to watch a weekly basketball game. But, something was different about this game because all of the players were nearly twenty years older then the players who currently play there.
The host of this game was Troy Taylor. Not only did he host this game but he played in the game and represented Anderson High School. Anderson High School has been playing Highland since the year 1958 and they carried on the winning streak against them in 2024.
“Being from Anderson, I know how deeply this city loves sports. That passion inspired me to create something special for our community. Using sports as a way to bring people together, give back, and inspire!” Taylor stated.
Taylor played for the Indians from 2005 to 2009. Things are different now from when Taylor played.
“The school spirit isn’t what it used to be back then, the gym was packed with thousands of fans filling the Wigwam to watch us play. The energy, support, and talent during those days were truly phenomenal!”
There was only one thing going through Troy’s head while playing in the game. “Don’t lose to Highland.” Troy Taylor.
When he played for Anderson his coach’s motto was “You cannot lose to Highland.” During the basketball season you make a lot of new memories, new friends, and bonds.
“Winning sectionals in 2009 against New Castle was one of my best memories in high school! A lot of hard work went into that year, and in the end it paid off.” Taylor explained.
Basketball has benefited Taylor in countless ways outside of high school. “It’s helped me improve my social skills, transform my mindset, and build self-belief like never before. Through this game, I’ve met some of my closest friends, earned a college education, and even made a living playing professionally.”
