On a cold day when students come from Thanksgiving break, Mr. Landes comes onto the announcements to tell teachers to have their students stand up and if they were wearing a coat to send them to the office. Students stood embarrassed as they were singled out rather if it was for wearing their coats or for pajama pants.
“ I wear my coat in the class because in every class I walk in, I’m cold and literally the whole school is the same way.” Zion Jones explained.
Most people think that schools shouldn’t really enforce the rule that students shouldn’t wear their coats in the classroom because some students may be anemic where they are cold all the time or the fact that they don’t have a locker or don’t know where their locker is. Also wearing a coat doesn’t affect the learning environment around me.
“Wearing my coat in class is how I learn because when I’m cold I’m very uncomfortable and I just don’t want to do anything, but when I wear my coat I get everything done because I’m warmer.” Jones said.
At the school Anderson High School there are a lot of different consequences to breaking the dress code, ISS all day is one of those consequences. We really don’t think that there should be any consequences to wearing a coat in the classroom because it is literally just like a jacket but a little heavier.
“If I’m wearing my coat in the classroom there shouldn’t be any consequences because no one is dying or hurt and I still get all of my work done.” Jones stated.
The Anderson Community School Corporation should adjust the dress code rules just a little bit and let students wear coats in the classroom as you can see it isn’t affecting the student learning abilities and it isn’t harming others so they should allow it because being warm makes some students focus, pay attention, and do their work.
