You don’t alway have to have everything planned out. Sometimes we don’t know what to eat for lunch so if a senior doesn’t quite know what they want to do after high school, that’s okay. Many seniors after graduation plans are as diverse as the students themselves. Some may want to go to college, go to the military, go straight into employment, or maybe they haven’t got it all figured out yet. I spoke with three seniors who were going to pursue these three pathways.
Senior Wuraola Olorunfemi will be attending college at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. “ I chose to go to IUB because it has a great nursing program and also a really good medical school, which I plan on attending afterwards;” Olorunfemi says.
A lot of seniors who really want to go to college usually have a reason why they want to go or a passion that they want to follow in college. “ I believe having a higher education gives you a lot of power in society and the society that we live in today, and it sets you apart from a lot of people because a lot of people don’t go to college;” Olorunfemi explains.
Some students like to follow in their families footsteps and go to college because their parents or their grandparents went. Or they want to go to college to major in the same thing as their parents but not this senior. “My dad has a PHD in environmental studies and government, and my mom has a MBA, which is a masters’ in business administration,” she says.
When going to college there is a certain amount of time you have to study whatever you’re going to major in, you could go to college for two years or maybe even six years. It just all depends on what you want to major in. “I will be in college for four years and then go on to med school for four years afterwards,” Olorunfemi says.
Leaving highschool and jumping into college life could be hard for students trying to adjust to all the classes, all the new people or just college life in general. “For me, I don’t believe it would be because I’ve been to IU multiple times over this summer and I’ll go for like a month or sometimes shorter to help me adjust;” Olorunfemi says.
Senior Maryah Elliot will be serving our country by joining the military. “I will be joining the army,” Elliot said.
You really don’t see too many people join the military after highschool unless they are experienced with it or someone in their family has been and they’re just following in the footsteps of family. “My uncle served in the national guard/navy, my cousin served in the national guard and my grandfather served in the army,”she says.
When leaving for the military you have to expect to be away from your family and friends for years at a time. “I will be in the Army for twenty plus years, I will be a human resources specialist for six years then commission to be an officer,” Elliot says.
The year has finally come to an end. You may still not know what you want to do or even have an idea about what you want to do with your life but now it’s finally over time to figure it out.
