The boys and girls’ track and field won their meet at Elwood on May 13. This meet was the first meet where the boys and girls teams won their separate meets at the same time. The meet began with the field events. Zhariea Hampton successfully threw shot put 33 feet and 10 ½ inches, placing first in the event. Hampton claims that she felt good about her performance at the meet, “I think I did pretty good because I was scraping every throw before the meet.” She says, “I don’t even practice disc but I got second place.”
Majority of the running events were coed with both teams, due to the very few runners in each event. Cambreanna Austin ran the 300 meter hurdles event with boys from the Anderson and Elwood team.
The team found their competition against Elwood Community High School very little, leading them to do events they wouldn’t usually do for their own entertainment. Four usual distance runners; Jayvin Campbell, Kaleb Dean, Cooper King, and Franky Tejada ran the 4×1 sprinting event. They decided to make the most of the event by wearing pink ski masks over their heads while sprinting. King explained the difficulty of running the event with the mask, “Breathing through this thing was really hard.” Campbell closed the 10 meter gap however they could not catch up to the Elwood runner.
Anderson made it their mission to have fun at this meet. Dean emphasized his feelings on the meet, “I haven’t had fun [at a meet] in a while.”
The “Big Man” relay was a 4×1 relay where eight usual throwers ran with an object of their choice to replace the baton. Placing second the boys’ relay Austin French, Reggie Brown, Fabian Rodriguez, and Noah Clark ran with a gatorade barrel. The girls placed third and consisted of throwers Hampton, Lola Fraizer, Jhazara Branson, and La’rayna Dabney.
