One year and seven months since its initial launch to critical acclaim on Steam, Pizza Tower arrives piping hot onto the Nintendo Switch! Taken from the Nintendo eShop description, “Pizza Tower is a fast-paced 2D platformer with an emphasis on movement, exploration, and score attack.” Pizza Tower is created by Tour De Pizza, a small indie development studio created and designed by Geoffroy “McPig” Lanctôt, programmed by Sertif, and composed by Ronan “Mr. Sauceman” de Castel, ClascyJitto, and Post Elvis. Pizza Tower stars Peppino Spagehtii, a fat middle-aged Italian man with the mission of stopping Pizzaface from blowing his restaurant to smithereens using the aforementioned Pizza Tower. With the basic synopsis out of the way, I’ll determine if this game was worth the purchase, I even asked a friend of mine, Blaze Reece to answer some questions about the game.
“What drew you into Pizza Tower?”
“I liked seeing the Main Character be scared of everything, I also liked the pixel art style resembling a bit of Undertale and the platforming seen in the game,” responded Blaze. Every single level in Pizza Tower is great! The levels complemented Peppino’s Moveset, they all look unique enough from one another to stand out on their own, and they all introduce new ideas and gimmicks that are all simple to understand and fun to speed through. The art style of the game is also simple yet very stylistic and recognizable, being reminiscent of cartoons from the 90s. This only makes delivering every action even more satisfying.
“Would you recommend the game to somebody?”
“To a beginner, not particularly but to somebody who likes more challenging platformers I would recommend it to them,” responded Blaze. I couldn’t agree more with this as Pizza Tower isn’t a game to take lightly. While it isn’t the hardest platformer out there, this game needs you to get a good grasp of the controls to experience it to the fullest. The Chef Tasks which serve as the game’s achievements are seemingly just arbitrary things you need to do across the level to 100% the game, they helped me gain a better understanding of the levels and ways I can use Peppino’s movements to the fullest. There are also many NPCs known as Pizza Grannies that teach you new moves originally not taught in the tutorial level, they also just provide funny flavor text in-between the levels and bosses. Of course, I cannot talk about Pizza Tower without mentioning the P Rank, a rank achieved by doing absolutely everything in a level while keeping up your combo. It’s a test of your memorization of the levels and control with the satisfying reward of bragging rights. So if you’re more into a platformer that can challenge you to its fullest, Pizza Tower is the game to buy.
