The SSC (Student Support Center) lets students come in and get help with their schoolwork. Teachers sit down with students and help them as much as possible without giving them the answer.
We have Mrs. Currie in C105. She helps with English, Social Studies, and electives. Electives are the classes you pick on top of the classes that you were provided for your Core 40. She stays on me pretty hard for doing my work.
We also have Mrs. Spencer in upstairs D206. She helps with Math, Science, and electives. She also stays with me about getting my work done.
They both do grade checks and will sometimes tell students what they need to do. They always make sure if kids come in there they are doing their work.
I ended up interviewing Lori Spencer and Bette Anne Currie who are the main SSC teachers. There are two more SSC teachers. However, they were not available during the time the interviews were taking place.
Lori Spencer is a teacher here at Anderson High School for SSC. She helps with Math, Science and electives. Spencer is dual licensed in Special-ED disabilities and she has her math license up to junior high.
She likes her job a lot by stating this “I didn’t choose this job.” Her previous job she was doing got eliminated and they said we have this position or we can move your schools. I am not going to another building.”
Another reason she likes her job is because she can help students that will usually sit in class fall asleep or just flat out not do their work.
Some troubles she faces is that she can help the kids academically. But she doesn’t always know how to help the kids socially or emotionally or their financial situation.
Bette Ann Currie she works downstairs in room C105. She works with any students that need help with English, Social Studies and Electives. She has an English license and Special ED license and she is a state acknowledged high school social studies teacher.
Currie loves her job very much and Enjoys it. Some troubles she faces is that “I don’t always know what books or stories a teacher is teaching until the kids get there and not being able to give the same attention to every one.”
She did not pick to be a SSC teacher but her and Lori Spencer were facing where their jobs were being eliminated. The thought that came to her mind was “I won’t be able to connect with kids.” . The only thing I have to say about that is you may not wanna be there but God wants you there for a reason.
