Belle Isle is one of the many hidden beauties of Michigan. Right on the outskirts of Detroit, not many people know it’s a state park. There are many attractions this small Island holds from the beach to the golf course. 4 million people visit this island a year

to enjoy the beauty of it. Though if you’re not from Michigan you probably haven’t heard of it before. Belle Isle has many attractions but three of them made my experience magical.

- The Aquarium
The aquarium is full of a variety of different animals, with 60 different exhibits, 146 different species, and 1,500 different individual animals. Not to mention the beautiful architecture of the building itself, with many of the ceilings being arched, and lined with aqua and green tile it heightens the experience to a whole new level. Perfect for a rainy or sunny day, and it’s guaranteed your kids will learn something new and love it.
- The greenhouse
The Greenhouse holds so much history and beauty, not to mention knowledge. Perfect for all ages, and weather, we all know that can be unpredictable depending on the time of year. Photo from Little Guide.
If you’re a fan of architecture like me you need to visit the greenhouse. Though built in 1902 and modified over the years it still maintained its beauty. The rich history of the building is interesting as well. The official name of the building is Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, dedicated to Anna Scripps Witcomb who donated her extensive rare orchid collection of 600 rare orchids that were rescued from Britain during World War II. As well as the orchids some other rare plants that don’t grow in Michigan. There are 20 greenhouse buildings in the conservatory 15 are used for caring for the orchids, cactus, and other tropical plants as well. My favorite part of the greenhouse is the koi pond, it made my experience very memorable. This building is packed full of knowledge and beauty. If you love plants and want to learn more about them this is a must-see.
- The beach

Stretching a quarter mile long on the Detroit side of the island is the beach. Typically packed with people during the summer it’s the perfect place to spend a sunny hot day. Not to mention you’re on a lake you don’t have to worry about the salt water damaging your hair, or your kids needing goggles. When you’re swimming be sure to keep an eye out for the tiny little shells you can collect that come in a variety of different colors. Though you can bring your own food, but there are plenty of food trucks and barbecue grills. Perfect for a family day outside you can bring the grandparents and the kids and they’ll all love it.
Overall Belle Isle is a wonderful family place. Full of knowledge, rich in history, not to mention the beautiful antique architecture. This place is meant for all ages young to old anyone can enjoy it. From swimming, the beautiful plants and animals, to stargazing and hands-on activities teaching the young, It’s truly a beautiful place you should consider taking your family too.
