The AHS Winter Guard won first place in their section and 5th overall in their first competition. The competition was on Jan. 24 at Franklin Central High School. Despite changes in the guard program they still managed to put together an award winning show titled “Viewers Like You” which is based on old PBS shows.
It is Rebecca Rick’s third year in the guard program. “I think this year’s show is really good. I like it a lot.” They pulled together an award winning show despite changes in the program. Rick says, “Like last year and the year before we’ve had two teams one varsity and one JV but now we only have one” They had to do this because they didn’t get enough sign-ups to have two full teams. “I know why we had to do it but I think it hurts the more advanced kids,” says Rick. The program has also had a few new leaders. “Yea most of the adults are new well last year they were really new but they have gotten better I think like more confident,” says Rick.
At their first competition the winter guard did very well. “Yeah I’m really happy with how we did. I mean we got first in our division and like fifth overall like we did good… of course later I hope we improve you know.”
The show is a combination of a lot of TV shows. Rick says, “Well like a bunch of PBS shows, we have Mr. Rogers and Fraggle Rock, Sesame Street, and Reading Rainbow all the classic ones.”
When looking at the rest of the season Rick feels hopeful. “As long as everyone does what they are supposed to do we will be good… I think we are going to go far this season.”
