Student athletes at Anderson High school have not been receiving athletic scholarships at the same rate as other comparable schools. What can be done to increase athletic scholarships at Anderson High School?
We had a chance to catch up with senior Baseball player at Anderson High school, Kaydin Hutchison, who is furthering his education as well as athletic career at Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana. Kaydin shared his thoughts about his post graduate career and what Anderson student athletes can do to increase their chances of getting sports scholarships. Kaydin says the way athletes can do better to get scholarships is you have to be able to have a great social media platform like twitter, instagram or etc. He also says that you need to have good grades to get athletic scholarships, that is a big part of you getting college scholarships.
Kaydin says he gets offers off of emailing coaches and reaching out to them. In his opinion that is the easiest way to get scholarships in baseball. Another way is baseball coaches can watch your film or go to your travel baseball games to come and recruit you.
Next we have an interview from a coach here at Anderson High School, the head boys basketball coach that has had a lot of success in sending his players to college for basketball. Mr Bowling shared his thoughts on how to get seen to get scholarships in basketball and more stay tuned. Coach Bowling says you can get offers from aau and playing on the top circuits really helps like EYBL which is nike, 3ssb which is Adidas and puma which is pro 16 and then the second Nike circuit EYCL is a really great circuit according to him. Even when you are not on the top circuits you can still get recruited by college coaches and it doesn’t have to be division one a lot of other schools go to other circuits and games. Coach Bowling says “You honestly have to just be in the right place at the right time.”
He says you have to have grades to get a scholarship in sports you need to have at least a 2.5 Grade point average. That is also a big reason why students don’t have scholarships now because they just don’t have the grades. We asked him another big question: why does he think there is success in boys basketball players getting basketball scholarships? He says “We just have been blessed to have a lot of talented players here and players that always worked hard on their game and they are active in aau.” He thinks more sports will have scholarships all around instead of just basketball, track and baseball. There is a lot of talent in other sports like girls basketball, swimming , softball , etc.
