Thousands of Hoosiers in many cities across Indiana walked the streets carrying banners and signs reading “No Kings”,“No Crowns”, and “No Thrones”. It was a protest aimed at President Donald Trump, who people say he has blurred a line between democracy and personal rule. The protest drew attention to the message that no leader should stand above the people.

  In downtown Indianapolis alone, more than 4,000 people gathered. They held up signs, marched,and listened to speeches. “Everyone, just, came together and chanted somewhat in an organized  manner,”said Christina Helzer, an Anderson resident who attended the protest that happened in Indianapolis. “It takes many people to make change, every voice matters,”Helzer said. She believes that if many people work together, they can influence the changes in their communities.

The movement was organized by an organization called Indivisible. It was founded by Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin. The group began a little after the 2016 election, with the goal of letting people find a way to participate in democracy. The organization is a movement trying to resist the Trump agenda. They have spent years trying to get people to show up and express their opinion, and through their hard work, they have had hundreds of mini movements across the country. 

“Honestly, Anderson has little to no involvement in things like this,” Helzer said. “I’m really hoping that changes. People here care, but sometimes they don’t think their voices matter.” Anderson had a little protest of up to 500, where they held signs and encouraged other cars to honk in support. She wants her town to be more involved in speaking up and sharing their opinion, just as she did. 

As the protest ended, Helzer felt excited. “I was excited, even after the protest. It made me realize that I would want to join more events like this one in the future.” The protesters shared a common goal, to remind those in power that is with the people, not just the ones in charge.
